If it’s time for a bathroom remodel, you need to consider the style you want and the materials you want to use for your project. Many people wonder if there is “shower tile” that they must choose for their bathroom. The truth is that there is no one type of tile that is “shower tile,” and various types of stone, glass, ceramic, and porcelain tile are all used in bathrooms and showers. If you are wondering about using porcelain tile for your shower, the simple answer is: Yes! You can use porcelain tile. There are excellent benefits to choosing porcelain tiles when creating or redesigning your shower.

Porcelain tile is water-resistant
One of the key elements that sets porcelain tile apart is its ability to keep out water. Porcelain is made of clay, sand, and other natural materials, and fired in a kiln at extremely high temperatures. It is denser and less porous than its cousin, ceramic tile. Because of this makeup, porcelain is nearly impervious to water! Porcelain tile has a water absorption rate of just .5 percent (or lower). In a wet area like a shower, exposure to water is one of the main factors that you must consider when selecting your materials. Porcelain tiles are an excellent choice for this reason.
Porcelain tiles are durable
Porcelain is extremely durable. As we know, it is a dense material and keeps out water, which in turn helps keep the tile in great shape. It is resistant to heavy impact and other stresses. Porcelain is so durable that it is often used in commercial locations with high foot traffic. (If porcelain tile can withstand that amount of use, it is sure to hold up for your daily shower!)
Porcelain tile comes in many different styles
If you think choosing porcelain means you’ll be stuck with plain, boring tile, think again! In today’s market, you can find porcelain tiles that look like many other materials, such as hardwood, marble, slate, or granite. You’ll have tons of color options, as well as the ability to select a glazed or unglazed tile. Porcelain tiles are also available in various shapes, patterns, and sizes, which helps you create the look you want, no matter the size of your bathroom shower.
Are there any downsides to using porcelain tile for my shower?
Using porcelain tile in a shower or bathroom is an excellent choice, but there are a few factors to consider when weighing your options.
Any wet tile can be slippery, so when evaluating porcelain tile, look for tile that has been certified as “slip-resistant.” You can also look for textured tile, which will provide a little more resistance to guard against slips.
Porcelain tile should be installed by someone with experience. Therefore, if you have your heart set on DIY-ing your bathroom, this might not be the tile for you (unless you have your own wet tile saw!).
When it comes to cost, porcelain tiles will cost more than ceramic tile; however, they are still a very affordable option for your shower. When you consider the increased durability and the resistance to water, the cost of porcelain over ceramic tile is easily offset.
